An Analysis of Vulnerability Discovery and Disclosure: Keeping One Step Ahead of the Enemy

TippingPoint

Worms, viruses, Trojans and other attacks are the biggest pain points for the modern day network administrator. In order to protect their networks against these attacks, many organizations deploy a layered approach to security. A strategy of testing and implementing vendor patches mixed with various firewall, IPS, antivirus and content filtering technologies leads to a more secure environment. Between the very real fear of
zero day exploits and the challenges associated with patching, many organizations dedicate a tremendous amount of resources to addressing this problem. Despite these efforts, the problem is getting worse. According to the CERT, the total number of vulnerabilities found has increased significantly over the last six years (from 1,090 in 2000 to 8,064 in 2006), and the number of incidents reported has also increased exponentially.
