Running a data center has always been a challenging job, as any IT manager will attest. In most cases, data centers evolved on a project-by-project basis, and over time they have grown ever more complicated.

How complicated? Today’s data center is teeming with complexity, starting with multiple-vendor solutions for servers, storage hardware, operating systems, applications, and utilities. Managers wrestle with an increasing number of business processes, users, and volumes of data to be processed and stored. Unfortunately, as is the case with most businesses, limited financial and human resources are available to the IT managers who are charged with running data center operations. These people are left in the unenviable position of expanding IT service levels while maintaining cost control.
